My name is Kaji, and I’m an experienced Japanese linguist, professional copy writer/editor, and skilled language coach.

I provide a range of writing and language-related services, and put this site together to summarize my offerings.

Services

Unless otherwise noted, all services as quoted are delivered in English.

If you would like the product delivered in Japanese (e.g. translating a document into Japanese instead of English), we can provide that service for double the standard rate.

Translation

For Japanese to English…

Manga Translation: $2/page (minimum charge: $10)
Postscript Pages: $50/page
4-koma (4-frame comic): $10/each
Word or Phrase Translation: $10
Regular Document Translation: Starting at $30/250 characters or part thereof

If the text to be translated is handwritten instead of typeset, a 50% surcharge will apply. Postscript pages already factor this in. In cases where a page contains both typeset and handwritten text (such as side comments on a manga page) the handwritten text will not be translated unless the page is charged at the handwritten rate.

Regular Document rates may be higher depending on if specialized knowledge or vocabulary (e.g. business, medical, lore, etc.) is required to complete the job. See Terms for details.

Postscript Pages are typically those pages that appear at the end of a manga chapter or volume where the author jots down various thoughts or comments. These pages are often handwritten and conversational. The rate shown takes these points into account. If a page is particularly text-heavy, we may insist that it be quoted as a Regular Document Translation job.

Rates are for Japanese to English. Translations from English into Japanese can be provided for double the corresponding English to Japanese rate. The Regular Document rate basis for English to Japanese jobs is per 250 words or part thereof.

Base Rate is $30/250 words or part thereof. Surcharges may apply if required to perform research.

Editing

Want someone to read your fanfiction? Self-conscious about your English? Have some other text written that you would like reviewed? We are happy to assist with that!

Simply provide a copy of the text, any points of particular concern, and your preferred style guide (if applicable) and we will edit the document’s grammar, spelling, and structure. If desired, we’ll even offer suggestions on how to further improve the document and include information on the changes that were made.

Base rate is $30/250 words or part thereof

Add-on services (per 250 words):
+$5 to apply a specified style guide
+$5 to track changes and add comments explaining grammar/vocabulary points
+$5 to offer suggestions on how to expand/improve the content.

Narration/Voice Acting

There is no surcharge for performing this service in Japanese.

Calligraphy

This service is Japanese-only, and therefore the surcharge for delivering in Japanese does not apply.

Kaji practices Japanese calligraphy, and is happy to take commissions! We take two types of calligraphic commissions: Words and Poems

Word commissions start at $10 if you have a specific Japanese word picked out that you would like written. If you know what English word you want to have translated and written, we will translate the word and, if applicable, provide options with details on context for an additional $10.

Poetry commissions start at $30 for Haiku (3-line poems) and $50 for Tanka (5-line poems), assuming you provide a copy of the poem you wish to have written (e.g. a favorite famous poem).

If you would like us to find a traditional Tanka poem for you, a $20 surcharge will apply; you will be asked to provide details on desired topics or themes.

If you would like us to compose an original poem for you in a classical Japanese style, we can do so for a composition fee equivalent to the corresponding poem rate ($30/Haiku, $50/Tanka). You will be asked to provide details on desired topics or themes.

About

Kaji began studying Japanese in 2000 and has been actively engaging with the language ever since.

He graduated with a B.A. in Japanese Studies, including independent study work in Classical Japanese and Japanese Linguistics. He then went on to complete an M.Ed. in Curriculum Design and Instruction, with an emphasis in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

He has read the Kokin Wakashuu in the original Japanese from start to finish.

He also has over 10 years’ experience writing and editing in professional business contexts. He also regularly proofreads English translations of academic papers for foreign authors and provides coaching services to assist with improving their compositional skills.

At heart, though, he loves the Japanese language and helping people engage with it.

Terms

All services are subject to the following terms of service. By submitting a request for service, you agree to be bound by them.

If any of these terms are unclear, please ask about them before placing a deposit for work to begin.

We reserve the right to update these terms of service at any time.

Services are provided on a private-use basis. You are free to use them for any private purpose. Use in Twitter/Twitch/YouTube profiles is explicitly allowed. If you wish to use our work products for publication (electronic, printed, or otherwise) or as part of your branding you will be required to purchase a commercial license for the work. If interested in a commercial license, please include how you wish to use the work when submitting your job request and a quote will be provided. You may upgrade to a commercial license after the job has been delivered by contacting Kaji and paying the difference in price.

We reserve the right to use all work products as samples of prior work.

All work should be credited to KajiSensei where used, and a link provided back to Kaji’s Twitch account located at https://www.twitch.tv/Kaji_Sensei.

Customers agree not to use work in a manner that misrepresents Kaji or anyone else. Our work products are created for you as a service at your request. You agree not to use them to create any “out of context” compilations or in any other manner that presents the work as an act of speech or expression of opinion on the part of Kaji or anyone else.

Under no circumstances are translations provided by us to be used for legally-binding purposes. While we will make every effort to provide a quality final product, we have no interest in assuming any liability related to the accuracy of the translations (or any lack thereof). Kaji is not a lawyer, doctor, or accountant. Nothing associated with this service constitutes any form of legal, medical, or financial advice.

All jobs delivered in Japanese will be reviewed by a native Japanese speaker prior to delivery to ensure quality.

All prices are in US Dollars (USD).

A deposit is required to start work. The deposit will be the greater of $10 or 50% of the job fee. This deposit is refundable if requested before the job has been started. The final deliverable will be provided once the remaining balance has been paid.

A “Specialized Domain” surcharge may apply to jobs that require specialized knowledge. Examples include (but are not limited to) things like business or medical vocabulary, or deep series lore that is not apparent within the base text. This surcharge may be waived if the customer provides all required knowledge as part of the job submission. If the fee is waived, we may query the customer to request additional information if needed to complete the job.

Delivery times are not set, however our current estimated delivery window is about 4 weeks from receipt of deposit. For an additional 25% rush charge, we will bump your job to the top of the queue, following any other clients that have already paid for their job to be rushed. If it is imperative that your work be completed ASAP, we also have a single priority delivery slot that sits at the top of the queue and is available for a 50% surcharge due when claiming the slot. This space will be unavailable until the job has been delivered if it is filled.

We reserve the right to refuse any job without the need to provide a reason.

No hardcore NSFW. No obscene content. Light NSFW content may be accepted; if so a 25% NSFW charge will apply. In short: No graphic sex acts and no sexualization of minors or apparent minors whatsoever.

Failure to provide information will result in job termination without refund. If information is requested from the customer (either to start a job or in the course of completing the job) the customer has 3 weeks to provide it. If the information requested hasn’t been received within 3 weeks your job will be terminated and the deposit kept.
